Bittergal did not argue. She had long ago learned that the quickest way through Brolox was sideways. Instead, she followed him across the shale flats where the wind spoke in unfinished sentences and the horizon bent like a tired coin. “Everything is misplaced,” Brolox announced, tapping his chest as if checking for loose change. “Even the sun rises somewhere else first.”
In our digital world we have lost our connection and fascination with stories. Yet somehow the stories are the ones that will stay behind one day when we are not here anymore.
We decided to encourage two friends to tell us their (very entertaining) life stories in their own unique way. Le Roux by leveraging his renowned ability to cook exquisite meals for groups of people and Gary by pulling on his 2 PhDs and hundreds of marathons on each continent on earth…
Dinner in the Desert is an intimate, open-air dining experience in Ladismith, hosted at Karoocible, in collaboration with our Ladismith accommodation partners.
Tables are thoughtfully placed throughout our garden - as close or as far apart as you like - creating a sense of privacy while still allowing conversation to drift gently between guests.
(If the Karoo wind has other plans, we simply gather inside the workshop and continue the evening there.)
An evening of exceptional food, thoughtful conversation, and a story that lingers long after dessert.
Limited seating. Pre-booking essential.
Dinner in the Desert is not just about one venue, it’s about Ladismith as a destination. Karoocible coordinates all accommodation bookings on your behalf, working closely with a selection of trusted local guesthouses Towerzicht Albert Manor.
Each offers its own Karoo character and hospitality, all within easy reach of the event hub.

For guests who would like to experience the Klein Karoo on two wheels, we will host an optional informal gravel group ride over the weekend.
The Karoo gravel routes start right at Karoocible’s doorstep. We were bowled over by the quiet roads, vast landscapes and Swartberg views — and would love to share a few of our favourites with you.
Route Options (weather & group dependent):
Medium: ± 25km
Hard: 70 - 90km
This is a social, self-paced group ride, not a guided commercial tour. Riders participate at their own risk.
Important:
Limited vehicle support will be available.
Riders must be comfortable riding gravel independently.
Helmets are compulsory.
Please bring your own bike if possible.
A small number of rental bikes are available at Karoocible (limited sizes).
Dr Gary van Vuuren makes a living thinking about risk, markets and the strange mathematics that quietly shape our world. A quantitative analyst and lecturer who has taught in London and South Africa, he specialises in credit risk and financial modelling, but don’t let that scare you. Gary has a gift for turning complex ideas (yes, even banking regulations and nuclear physics) into stories that are sharp, funny, and unexpectedly relatable. Around a dinner table, he’s less about equations and more about curiosity and conversations that might just change how you see things ...
Dinner Talk:
Alone in the Universe?
An exploration of cosmic time, the improbability of intelligent life, and the unsolved mathematical mysteries that still defy us — from the Big Bang to prime numbers.
Le Roux van der Walt is a Cape Town-based self taught cook, who learnt to love the communal sharing of Mediterranean flavours and dishes whilst working at Anatoli Turkish Restaurant in Cape Town for over 10 years. He is honoured to serve you at our Karoo table. Other interests are cooking for yoga and health retreats and testing and savouring the new restaurants that pop up in the city centre! A city-dweller at heart, Le Roux balances the worlds of food and finance, a tax-fixer by profession and food-maker by heart. He is happiest around a table surrounded by good wine, lively conversation and bold, sun-soaked flavours.
